“Making Pots Personal with Shape and Color”

 Clay Artists of San Diego Presents A Hands On Workshop with Mark Bell

Mark Bell is a full time potter who maintains a studio in Blue Hill, Maine. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh in 1982 and his M.F.A. from Arizona State University in 1986. He has taught craft programs at Haystack Island Workshop in Deer Isle, Maine, Mudflat Studio in Somerville, MA and has exhibited his work in over 50 shows across the U.S. Mark works in porcelain making wheelthrown, altered high fire vessels.

The first day of the workshop will focus on wheel throwing and altering pots off the hump. Scale, proportion, composition and visual function will all be addressed. How can we slightly alter what we do to make our pots better?

The second day will start with trimming pots two different ways: First with hand thrown chucks and second with a wood workers sure form and a stainless steel rib. Why do the bottoms of pots matter?

Next Mark will discuss and demonstrate color theory in relation to glazing, spraying, layering different thicknesses, matt and glossy combination. How to approach glazing in a way to set up good accidents to happen. How can we get the most out of the glazes that we already use? We will start with the basics of spraying and glaze application and move into advanced techniques and special effects.

This workshop is open to wheel throwers who are beyond the basic skills of centering and who can already make cylinders and bowl forms.
