Workshop Description
This is a 3 day glaze and gas firing workshop designed to show students how get oil spot glazes in an oxidation gas firing. We will be firing a gas kiln to cone 10‐12 in oxidation with a reduction soak at peak. Depending on the size of the workshop, you will be able to glaze and fire up to 5 small sized pots (approximate volume is 12” x 12” x 8” high). Suggested shapes are tea bowls, cups and bowls. Any cone 10 clay body will work but it is suggested that you bring both stoneware and porcelain bisqued pieces to test the glazes on your work. Glazes and glazing instructions will be provided as this is a multiple glazing technique which takes time for the glazes to dry. We will fire the kiln on Saturday which takes about 10 hours or so. During that time we will go over a brief history, firing cycles, cones, and iron glazes types, like temmoku, oil spot (high feldspar, slip glaze, multi‐layering, etc.) iron crystalline, etc. This will continue until Sunday when we unload the kiln around 2:00 p.m. or so. There will also be a question and answer discussion of various ceramic topics which will depend on the group interest. They may include glazes, clays, slips, cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. *Please note that the workshop hours may vary depending on the glazing and firing schedule.
